Mar 26,  · The Wichita Train Whistle Sings was the first solo album by Michael Nesmith, recorded during weekend sessions on November , at RCA Hollywood while he was still a member of The Monkees. The album comprises instrumentals of Nesmith originals that were performed by a full orchestra, including members of the Wrecking Crew, Los Angeles's top session musicians.

The Wichita Train Whistle Sings, however, is another matter. This recording, in my opinion, one of the greatest albums of instrumental music recorded in the past 50 years. Michael Nesmith jumps from "teen idol" to this, as yet, undefined style of music. Who would have thought? I first heard this album in when working for Ampex Stereo Tapes.

A moderately entertaining album. The CD version of the album is basically an "official" bootleg released by Michael Nesmith himself. The CD was mastered from playback of an old mono vinyl LP. It is available from Michael Nesmith's official website (Videoranch).

The Wichita Train Whistle Sings project also allowed Nesmith the opportunity to record a few songs that he would revisit during his solo career, such as the pseudonym-esque "Carlisle Wheeling." The strict, if not somewhat lumbering, 4/4 time signature performed here is the antithesis of the easy country-rock sound most synonymous with the tikateshilfcorcockhathouposttagerri.coinfo Rating: % positive.

This two-fer on the U.K-based Edsel imprint contains a pair of Michael Nesmith's most diverse non-pop music projects. The Wichita Train Whistle Sings is the artist's solo debut LP, in which he put together a star-studded piece ensemble of studio musicians to perform ten big-band orchestral arrangements of his own compositions.4/5(3).
